Tour Overview

Ostpolitik, DDR, Stasi, Ostalgie, Trabi, and the Wall are just a some of the terms that come to mind. Do these names and acronyms conjure up memories from the recent past that are well-known and dramatic? Come with us to an unforgettable journey back in time as we see the Cold War locations of Berlin and remember significant events and family stories from the end of WWII to the fall of the Berlin Wall.

We will pass via Alexanderplatz, the city's historic crossroads and the epicenter of the new socialist system. In the 1987 reconstruction of the medieval district of St. Nicholas, we shall discover a new way of viewing historical buildings.

We willvisit the former Stalinallee, an imposing boulevard with a peculiar architectural style known as 'Wedding Cake,' which was also the route taken by Soviet tanks to liberate Berlin in April 1945.

We willgo to the Prenzlauer Berg area, which is both bohemian and fashionable, as well as the Kulturbrauerei, a historic brewery.

We willalso explain what the 'Death Strip,' of which we'll view an original section on Bernauer Strasse's Wall Memorial, represents, as well as the function of a dramatic emblem of the era - the Berlin Wall.

We will look at East Berliners' daily lives and compare them to the nearby but starkly opposed reality of West Berlin.
